Greetings again from the darkness. The secret sauce for movies based on comic books and superheroes has always seemed pretty obvious … give the hardcore fans what they want. Somewhere along the way, the industry shifted its focus from entertainment to pushing the boundaries of technology. The result was a (many) years long stream of visual extravagance with little heart and soul. Writer-director Shawn Levy and co-writers Rhett Reese, Ryan Reynolds, Zeb Wells, and Paul Wernick have managed to right the wrong and put things back on track. Of course,  Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox and the Marvel Universe slowed down development, but they have finally capitalized on two fan-favorite characters developed by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza … Deadpool and Wolverine.

Billed as a ‘threequel’, this follows the 2016 and 2018 Deadpool movies that vaulted Ryan Reynolds to superstardom. His quick and colorful banter and wit were perfect complements to his physical gifts. When Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine first shared the screen in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE in 2009, the spark between the two was clear. Here we are 15 years later, and the two characters share an entire film – and the real life friendship between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is well-documented.

This is not the place to come for spoilers or a recap of the story. No, that place would be the theater. What I will say is that it’s very impressive how the filmmakers get both Deadpool and Wolverine/Logan back in the saddle, while at the same time paying homage to the past. The tributes begin even as the movie starts with a new montage reminding us of those who have built the MCU. Additionally, the re-introduction of Wade Wilson’s circle (Morena Baccarin, Karan Soni, etc), is remarkably simple, yet effective … and of course, Blind Al (the great Leslie Uggams) is especially fun. However, what’s most impressive and ingenious is the manner in which Deadpool tracks down Wolverine/Logan, one who was unmistakably dead at the end of LOGAN (2017).

Together they are to save Wilson’s world … and perhaps other worlds as well. This danger occurs due to Mr Paradox (an over-the-top Matthew MacFadyen) working at the direction of Time Variance Authority. It’s really not too complicated, which is why this works. Even those of us who don’t spend hours pouring over comic books will follow the story and understand how Cassandra Nova (an excellent Emma Corrin) is the key onscreen antagonist, although it must be noted that this genre demands surprises and director Levy does not disappoint. Whether it’s Rob Delaney, twists on the Deadpool character, the Wolverine cowl, or enough F-bombs to challenge a Tarantino movie, this first R-rated Marvel film is packed with aha moments. And yes, Jackman flashes his stunning physique and the slew of cameos are sure to satisfy.

World class zingers are delivered with charm (or Logan’s trademark grumpiness), and the laughs are many, though they work well with the heart and soul of what is not just a ‘save the world’ flick, but also a terrific buddy film. The two cautions I’ll offer here: it’s definitely a hard “R” and make sure you stay for the closing credits for a bit of nostalgia.

AMERICAN FICTION (2023)

Greetings again from the darkness. From one who watches too many movies every year, I’m amazed this film is the work of a director making his feature film directorial debut. Writer-director Cord Jefferson was one of the lead writers for the excellent series “Master of None”, and he has adapted the 2001 novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett for the big screen. It’s a brilliant satire and commentary on a society that has twisted things to the point where no one knows what to say or how to say it.

The film opens with a college professor pushing back on a student’s overly emotional reaction to his use of the N-word in class. What strikes us in the scene is that the professor is black and the student is white. The confrontation costs Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (the always great Jeffrey Wright) his job at a New England university, and perfectly sets the stage for the rest of the story – much of which centers on Monk’s incredulity at the progression of events around him.

Without a steady teaching paycheck, Monk heads to his see his agent Arthur (well-known character actor John Ortiz), who informs that his most recent intellectual book has no market, and suggests he write something a bit more mainstream. Monk heads to the Boston book festival and hears author Sintara Golden (comedian Issa Rae, BARBIE) in a public reading of a particularly stereotypical excerpt from her latest best-seller, purported to telling “black stories, our stories”. Monk simply can’t believe there is an audience for this or that it passes for black representation.

On a lark, Monk sits down to crank out a “black” story by a black writer. He does so as a joke, and is shocked, and a bit annoyed, that a publisher comes back with a huge offer. The negotiations with the publisher are hilarious. We see two white professionals desperate to offer a cool black book, yet so afraid to say the wrong thing (something offensive), that they inexplicably agree to Monk’s terms … changing the title to an unpublishable curse word. As a bonus, Monk has published the book under the pseudonym Stagg R. Lee (a takeoff on the classic Lloyd Price song). The publishing deal requires Monk to assume the identity of a wanted fugitive as part of the backstory for marketing purposes. When the movie offer rolls in, Monk is again beside himself, and states, “the dumber I act, the richer I get.”

While all this is going on, Monk is also facing some struggles in his personal life with his mother (80 year old Leslie Uggams, “Roots”) who is struggling with dementia, his financially-strapped sister Lisa (Tracee Ellis Ross, Diana’s daughter, THE HIGH NOTE, 2020), and brother Cliff (Sterling K Brown, WAVES, 2019, “This is Us”) whose recent divorce was caused by his revealing his preference for a gay lifestyle. All of this for a family whose dad committed suicide years ago. In the midst of all the family and professional drama, Monk strikes up a relationship with Coraline (Erika Alexander, GET OUT, 2017), a neighbor across the street, though he can’t bring himself to come clean with this latest publishing scheme.

The best comedies have something to say, and the best satires are often quite cynical as they expose the absurdity of our world. Monk is dumbfounded at many of the same things that dumbfound us, and this peaks at his meeting with an aptly named movie producer, Wiley Valdespino (played by Adam Brody, READY OR NOT, 2019). Myra Lucretia Taylor (THE BIG SICK, 2017) has a supporting role as the housekeeper, and there are too many terrific scenes to count. One of the best is a debate between Monk and Sintara, and the writing is priceless and brilliant. An intelligent man like Monk cannot wrap his head around the fact that black books pandering to white readers who are trying to follow the rules is the new path to success. Filmmaker Cord Jefferson delivers the message (warning?) in a smart, funny movie featuring a wonderful lead performance by Jeffrey Wright.

DEADPOOL (2016)

deadpool Greetings again from the darkness. Superhero movies have been dominating the box office for the better part of two decades, and most tend to lean towards moody and intense … though Iron-Man and The Avengers have certainly enjoyed adding searing one-liners to the mix. As for ratings, superheroes have steadfastly claimed PG-13 as the perfect blend of massive action, massive muscles and massive audiences. So it’s a little surprising to find a movie about a relatively unknown superhero, that’s the first feature from director Tim Miller (previously a visual effects guru), crashing through the R-rated barrier in no-holds-barred fashion. It’s startling and refreshing to see a new take on what had become just a bit too familiar.

This is a movie for which you will want to actually read the opening credits and stay for the post credit scene (a 2-parter). Additionally, you will want to make sure you keep not only little kids away (remember the hard R-rating), but also any grown-ups who are offended by harsh language (on the Tarantino scale), ultra-violence (on the Kill Bill scale) or any combination of sex, sex talk or sex jokes (all at an entirely new level). To label this movie as crass or profane is like calling Chewbacca somewhat fuzzy. And while it pushes the raunch-o-meter, it’s also blazingly funny at times (especially for a cancer movie).

The previously mentioned opening credits refer to the writers as “the real heroes here”, and while the plot is pretty textbook superhero stuff, it’s the barrage of one-liners and sight gags at which those writers so excel. They even make sure those unfamiliar with the Wade Wilson backstory understand that he is a former special forces operative turned mercenary for the average Joe’s and Jane’s. In no time, it’s drilled into our heads that he is also a wiseacre, wisenheimer, wise-ass, wisecracker and any other adjective that means funny but not wise.

Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and leaves no doubt that he has finally found the role that fits him as well as his red suit. If you are convulsing as you flashback to Mr. Reynolds as Green Lantern (2011), take solace in the fact that this movie fires a couple of deadly shots at that oh-so-disappointing effort. His girlfriend Vanessa is played by Morena Baccarin (“Homeland”), and his best buddy/bartender is played by TJ Miller (“Silicon Valley”). Since Reynolds had a brief appearance as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), there are numerous nods to that franchise, including two key roles here for Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). The target of Deadpool’s revenge comes in the form of Ed Skrein (The Transporter Refueled) as Ajax and Gina Carano as Angel Dust … accompanied by her theme song “Angel of the Morning” (unfortunately it’s the Juice Newton version, and not the more powerful Merrillee Rush and the Turnabouts version). Lastly, it’s pure joy to see Leslie Uggams cast in a spunky supporting role, and Stan Lee appears in what might be his most unique cameo yet.

As for music, the range is Neil Sedaka to DMX – yep, you’re unlikely to find a more diverse soundtrack. Your kid may have a Captain America figurine on their bookshelf, but the R-rating for this one is solidified in the first 10 minutes, and is relentlessly reinforced until the movie ends – this means don’t bring your kids! We can only imagine how much fun those old enough to watch are going to have, and brace yourself for an onslaught of Deadpool comebacks over the next few weeks … only hopefully not in church, at the office, in front of grandma, etc …
