EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY (Alles Wird Gut, short, Germany 2015)

everything will be okay Greetings again from the darkness. Dramatic short films are challenged with generating an ultra-quick connection with viewers. German director Patrick Vollrath begins the film by showing a man anxiously pacing and buzzing the gate bell outside a suburban home. Our instincts that tell us he must be in some kind of trouble fade a bit when an 8 year old girl runs into his arms exclaiming “Daddy!”

Lea (newcomer Julia Pointer) clearly loves her father, and we quickly figure out this must be the scheduled every other weekend visit resulting from a recent divorce. Lea’s excitement is palpable as they stop off at a toy store where her dad tells her she can pick out any two items she wants. A simple gesture that’s probably repeated thousands of times each weekend, re-ignites the instincts we felt in the opening scene. Some “little” hints confirm our suspicion as the two hurriedly rush to an appointment at a government office and then on to the airport.

Simon Schwarz plays Michael Baumgartner, the dad who transitions from anxious to warm/loving to purely desperate. His performance, and that of young Ms. Pointer, are realistic and so spot on that we as viewers are sympathetic to both. It’s an exceptionally tense and dramatic half-hour reminding us that in a broken family, it’s rarely the case that “everything will be okay”, and sometimes things escalate into a literal tug-of-war that is heart-breaking. This is expert work from a filmmaker that understands the magic of short films, and it’s little wonder the film has been so well received at AFI, Cannes and numerous other festivals.

OUR DAILY DOSE (2015, doc short)

Greetings again from the darkness. Documentary director Jeremy Seifert made some noise in 2013 with his creatively titled GMO OMG, which along with his latest fit snugly into a sub-genre I call “Wake up, sheep!”  Mr. Seifert has a gentle approach in alerting us to topics which the general public mostly never even considers … at least until enough people are talking about it, and we are forced to learn something.

Since 1945, fluoridation of public water systems has been commonplace and widely accepted as a process that reduces dental breakdowns (cavities) by as much as 25% (roughly one cavity per person). It’s only recent scientific studies that have categorized fluoride as a “Developmental Neurotoxin” and “Endocrine Disruptor”.  In English, those two terms are defined respectively as a substance which negatively impacts brain development in children, and negatively impacts thyroid function. Mr. Seifert states that these studies prove that it’s time to re-think the national position on water fluoridation.

We learn that Grand Rapids, Michigan was the first city to add fluoride to its drinking water, but of course, one would be hard-pressed these days to find even a small scale municipality that provides un-fluorinated water to its populace. Scientists and doctors in the film (somewhat surprisingly) categorize fluoride as a poison rather than a nutrient, and that is certainly an attention-grabbing term. Their stance is that inclusion in our drinking water means it contradicts the “informed consent” doctrine that covers health care, and the real risk seems to be in dosage control. See, most water systems can’t even measure the amount of fluoride used, and there is no accurate way to track any person’s actual intake – given that water is used in so many food and drink products.

Asbestos, Lead, Arsenic, and Vioxx are all provided as examples of substances that were once deemed safe. Sure, Mr. Seifert’s approach might be considered a “scare tactic” or overreaction, but his point really is that it’s time to question the use and, if nothing else, allow consumers to make their own educated decisions. When he states 97% of Western European countries do not fluoridate water, many jokes on British dental work spring to mind … but this is also a pretty hearty statistic leading credence to Seifert’s call for more and better research.

The filmmaker even includes a Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb reference as acknowledgement that some will wave this off as just another conspiracy theory; however, if his 20 minute film can wake enough sleeping sheep, then perhaps some serious dialogue can be had.

DIFF 2015 – Days 6 and 7

DALLAS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Days 6 and 7, Wednesday and Thursday April 15 and 16

Below is a recap of the four movies I saw over these two days. I am counting the six Documentary Shorts as one movie since it was one block on the festival programming:

DOCUMENTARY SHORTS – DIFF 2015

The Dallas International Film Festival is a great place to catch up with those hard to find short films. It’s not unusual for short films to be later developed into feature films, but regardless, the short film format requires a unique skill set for writers, directors and actors. A connection must be made immediately with the viewer because there is no time for gradual acceptance or interest.

Short films come in three flavors: live action, animated, and documentary. Below is a recap of the six documentary short films at this year’s DIFF.

Crooked Candy (USA)

Directed by Andrew Rodgers. Kinder eggs are illegal in the United States as they are considered a choking hazard for kids. However, this collector has hundreds of the miniature figures/toys thanks to decades of pursuing the eggs through his global travels.

(The And) Marcella & Rock (USA)

Directed by Topaz Adizes. A couple face off against each other with some extremely personal questions. In a matter of minutes, the audience is as uncomfortable listening as the participants are in revealing very private thoughts.

Spearhunter (USA)

Directed by Adam Ruffman, Luke Poling. The story of Gene Morris who successfully fought to get spearhunting approved as an acceptable form of hunting in Alabama. Guns and bows lacked the challenge that Morris desired.  We even visit his legacy – a Spearhunting museum that houses some of the trophies from his 592 kills. His ex-wife labels the late Mr. Morris a serial animal killer.

Master Hoa’s Requiem (USA)

Directed by Scott Edwards. Master Hoa was one of the hundreds of thousands who fled South Vietnam by boat in 1975. In the process, he lost his family. We see how he re-established a new life, and we go with him on a heart-breaking search for the graves of his family.

Cast in India (India/USA)

Directed by Natasha Reheja. Have you ever noticed that the manhole covers in NYC are stamped “Made in India”? Ms. Reheja noticed and thus began her journey to foundry where the bronze plates are crafted. It turns out these are highly skilled workers who take great pride in their work, face labor union issues, and sacrifice their hands, feet and backs for the manually intensive manufacturing process.

The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul (Australia)

Directed by Kitty Green. We see a stream of auditions from girls of various ages wanting the highly coveted role of the Ukrainian legendary figure skater Oksana Baiul – former World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist.

That’s it for the documentary shorts. Below are the three features I watched in addition to the previous doc shorts.

ECHOES OF WAR

echoes of war Greetings again from the darkness. The fallout from war goes beyond the violence and massive loss of life. Returning soldiers often struggle to regain a sense of normalcy, and are often labeled as PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  And what of the families … those left behind with a gaping hole in their heart from the loss of a loved one, and those having to adjust to the “affected” surviving soldiers? This is the heart-breaking story of two families at the convergence of all of the above.

With the Civil War ending, Wade (James Badge Dale, “The Pacific”) returns home in search of “peace”. He shows up at the house of his brother-in-law Seamus (Ethan Embrey) and is greeted with open arms by his niece Abigail (Maika Monroe, It Follows) and nephew Samuel (Owen Teague), who clearly worship him as their favorite Uncle.

Though it’s not a Hatfield and McCoys extreme, it doesn’t take long for Wade to figure out the awkward and mostly silent unbalanced relationship between Seamus’ family and the McCluskey neighbors. Randolph McCluskey (William Forsythe) is a bitter man who lost a son in the war, has an unresponsive wife (Beth Broderick) due to that loss, and two sons: Dillard (Ryan O’Nan) who is a bit slow-witted, and Marcus (Rhys Wakefield) who is far too sensitive to be accepted by his crusty old father.

Wade’s best intentions of protecting his family turn a barely tolerable arrangement into an all-out war. On top of that, we get a bit of Romeo and Juliet to go along with Wade’s slow-drip meltdown as he is simply unable to handle what the war has made him. The connection between Abigail and Marcus is exciting to watch, though we all recognize a romance facing a heavily stacked deck. Wakefield was previously seen in The Purge, and Ms. Monroe was stunning in It Follows. Both are young actors to keep an eye on.

It’s almost unbelievable to accept that this is the first feature film from director Kane Senes and his co-writer John Chriss. There is so much going on here with multiple layers of conflict and personalities … plus the movie is beautifully shot with an air of artistic flair that lightens a mood when necessary, or makes an analogy of nature and man either through plants, critters or the sky. Religious overtures play a role, and it’s fascinating to watch the various interactions … each more complex than the previous, culminating with Wade and Seamus who seemingly couldn’t be more different.

The film explores the comparison of bravery versus cowardice and it challenges our beliefs. There is also a theme of survival – just what makes a life worth living? The acting here is something to behold. All eight are exceptional and contribute to the film’s ultra-serious approach, broken by brief moments of pure joy. With a terrific and complex story, stellar acting, and a talented director, this is one that serious film goers should seek out and embrace.

NOWITZKI: THE PERFECT SHOT (documentary)

nowitzki Greetings again from the darkness. Dallas loves Dirk. The reasons why become obvious during this biopic that takes us from Dirk’s youth basketball league in Germany through his NBA Finals, while including significantly more information on his family and personal life than we have previously seen. Interviews come courtesy of such well known faces as Kobe Bryant, Don Nelson, Michael Finley, Mark Cuban, Yao Ming, Jason Kidd and former NBA commissioner David Stern.

Contrary to many sports documentaries, this is no shrine to its subject. Of course, we can’t help but be charmed by the “great guy” superstar, but it’s through his life challenges that we come to truly respect Dirk as a man. Director Sebastian Denhardt is one of the most prolific documentarians and filmmakers in Germany, but this look at Germany’s most popular and successful athlete is his best and most accessible work to date.

The most interesting segments involve Dirk’s long time personal coach Holger Geschwindner, plus insight from Dirk’s father, mother, sister, and childhood friend. It’s during these times that we realize Dirk’s “posse” is made of the people who he has always trusted – family and friends. The only two newcomers to his group of “insiders” are Lisa Tyner and Dirk’s wife Jessica. Ms. Tyner is the Mavericks staffer who took Dirk under her wing when he was a youngster transitioning to life in the United States.

While the film drills home the importance of Dirk’s work ethic and commitment to excellence, the most entertaining moments include: Dirk’s first meeting with Steve Nash, Dirk as a stick figure on Holger’s software, Dirk in a tennis skirt (for Halloween), Dirk dominating on the court as a teenager, Dirk’s mother discussing his move to the U.S., and best of all, Dirk stretching the truth a bit while meeting with former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt … and then admitting it!

These days, disappointment seems to be the most common reaction when the curtain gets pulled back on celebrities and heroes. It’s refreshing to look into the life and see that the biggest scandals were when Dirk was the one cheated by a former girlfriend, and he stood by in full support of a friend going through an investigation for tax evasion. Dirk shows he is as impressive as a human being as he is a basketball player. What he definitely isn’t? A singer … we re-live his “We are the Champions” rendition from the parade. Dirk rocks!

DARE TO DRUM (documentary)

dare to drum Greetings again from the darkness. D’Drum. Stewart Copeland. Gamelan. Most viewers might be familiar with one of these – Stewart Copeland is the world famous Rock drummer and co-founder (with Sting) of The Police. D’Drum is a Dallas area based ensemble of percussionists who have been playing together for two decades. Gamelan is the traditional percussion based music so important to Java and Bali in Indonesia.

If you are curious how these three pieces might fit together, let’s make it more challenging and unlikely by blending in world class conductor Maestro Jaap Van Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Yes, this really happened and the result was a show-stopping 2011 performance of “Gamelan D’Drum”, a symphony composed by Copeland, conducted by the Maestro, and performed by the D’Drum fellows and the musicians of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

John Bryant is one of the drumming members of D’Drum, and in very impressive fashion, he also directed, edited and produced the film. He perfectly captures the process of these passionate musicians (insert drummer joke here) and their never-ending quest for new percussion instruments, no matter the part of the world. Their multi-cultural approach led to a stage filled with dozens of instruments, including those custom-made for the performance.

Inspirational seems to fall short in describing what unfolds on screen. Mr. Copeland’s enthusiasm towards the project was obvious in the post-screening Q&A as he energetically answered any question even remotely directed his way. See, he is what one would call a courageous musician – one not intimidated by the traditions of the world of symphonies and orchestras. He understands that the foundation of art is creating something new, and he brilliantly manages this without losing the audience.

While Copeland’s creativity and D’Drums eagerness are commendable and a joy to watch, none of this happens without the (risky) support of Maestro Jaap Van Zweden. So many conductors are tied to the traditions, and hesitant at best, to take risks with music that has been played the same basic way for sometimes hundreds of years. Instead, his positive attitude and willingness to push boundaries delivered one of the most exciting evenings ever for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra … not to mention Stewart Copeland and the members of D’Drum.  Should you have the opportunity to see this one, take it. And afterwards … “Do it again, man”!

 

 

 


OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: Documentary (2013)

lady in 6 Thanks to the historic Texas Theatre, what is normally a gap in my annual movie-going experience has been filled.  The documentary shorts category is especially difficult to program for both theatres and cable channels.  Run times are typically around 40 minutes, and the subject matter is not always the most uplifting in nature. The Oscar nominated group this year includes the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor, Yemen’s uprising, a violent hate crime, a terminally ill prisoner, and a cantankerous artist who avoids most interaction with people.  Not exactly a festive day at the theatre!

Despite the subject matter, documentary shorts are an exceptionally interesting genre because they must quickly capture our interest with a person or topic, and then provide enough depth that we feel the need to discuss or think about it long after the short run time has finished.  Oh, and the filmmaker is usually working with a miniscule budget, often handling the camera and editing, and most any other detail with very little help.  It’s truly a genre of passion not profit.

DOCUMENTARY SHORTS

These are not my Oscar predictions (coming in a couple of days), but rather a brief recap of each in the order of my preference – starting with my favorite.

LADY IN NUMBER 6

Filmmaker Malcolm Clarke wonderfully captures the spirit of the oldest Holocaust survivor, Alice Herz-Sommer. She was 109 during filming and she happily passes on the joy she finds in every day life, despite a most cruel and unusual past. Alice’s parents were friends with Franz Kafka in Prague, and as a little girl, she would listen to the stories he told. Her remarkable prowess on the piano led her to a remarkable career as a performer, but more importantly saved her life at Theresienstadt concentration camp. Alice Herz-Sommer passed away the day after her story so inspired me.  She was 110.

KARAMA HAS NO WALLS (Czech)

The 2011 uprising/revolution in Yemen is seen up close through the lens of two cameramen (and director Sara Ishaq) right in the middle of the peaceful demonstration-turned-violent attack. When the soldiers, snipers and thugs begin attacking the civilians, we see people die in the streets. We see their friends carry bodies away. The attack resulted in 53 deaths and numerous injuries. It’s incredibly discomforting to watch, especially on the heels of the Oscar nominated feature documentary The Square, which details the similar uprising in Egypt.  Kamara (Dignity) indeed.

PRISON TERMINAL: THE LAST DAYS OF PRIVATE JACK HALL

This is a very unique story that takes place within the walls of Iowa State Penitentiary, one of the countries maximum security prison. It’s not unusual for “lifers” to die in prison, but what is unusual is a hospice wing funded by private donations and staffed by many volunteer prisoners.  We see this in action by following war hero turned convicted murderer Jack Hall.  The film gives an overview of how prison hospice can provide a dignified death, and we see this through an extremely close and personal  vigil of Mr. Hall through the lens of director Edgar Barens.

FACING FEAR

What may be the most incredible story and coincidence (destiny??) of any of the nominees, this film tells how the lives of Tim Zaal and Matthew Boger collided not once, but twice. A very young Mr. Boger was kicked out of his house by his mother. She refused to have a gay son living under her roof.  A few years later, Mr. Zaal and his band of neo-Nazi skin-heads chased down a random gay man (Mr. Boger) on the streets of L.A. simply to beat him to death.  By pure coincidence (or was it?), the two cross paths again in the museum where Mr. Boger works. As a reformed hate crime zealot, Mr. Zaal is the scheduled speaker of the day.  Director Jason Cohen captures this story of reformation, redemption, forgiveness and too many other emotions to name.

CAVEDIGGER

Ra Paulette is not a particularly likeable guy.  But he cares little what you think. His artistry lies in his unusual ability to dig caves into the hills and mountains, creating spectacular living spaces.  In an all too familiar story line, this artist is one of the worst businessmen you have ever seen. Since he can’t estimate his work or take direction from his clients, his jobs often get cut short and left unfinished. In his constant search for his Magnum Opus, he leaves friends and a wife in the piles of rubble he pulls out of the earth.  Despite his best efforts, director Jeffrey Karoff can’t make us like Mr. Paulette, no matter how much we marvel at his talent.

OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: Live Action and Animated (2013)

Greetings again from the darkness. Yes, it’s almost Oscar time again! This past weekend, I took my annual trek to the Magnolia Theatre to check out this year’s nominated Short Films – Animated and Live Action.  If you have never taken advantage of this opportunity, I would encourage you to do so. It is always an interesting 3-4 hours that keeps your mind (and eyes) spinning, while reminding us that short films are quite a different skill set than feature films.  Though I didn’t find this year’s films to be exceptionally memorable, it’s still insightful to view the variance in styles and substance from different countries and filmmakers.  I must say the nominations were a bit heavy on drama, with only a couple of exceptions.  Even the animation films were mostly adult in nature, which is unusual.

Below is my quick recap of each, with each category in order of my preference (not my Oscar predictions):

LIVE ACTION

voorman Helium (Denmark) – a young, terminally ill boy is bed-ridden and trying to come to terms with waiting to die. A kindly orderly befriends him and weaves a fantastical ongoing story to ease the boy’s acceptance of the afterlife.  It’s a combination of fine acting and special effects.

That Wasn’t Me (Aquel No Era Yo, Spain) – aid workers are taken hostage in Sierra Leone and we witness the brutal atrocities of war with an emphasis on child soldiers.  It is extremely well made, but torturous to watch.

Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? (Finland) – a light-hearted look at the chaotic morning of a family running late for a wedding, and the added stress brought on by a Supermom. This was a nice dose of levity amongst the darker films.

The Voorman Problem (UK) – Martin Freeman and Tom Hollander (pictured left) star in a an unusual prison-based vignette where, this time, it’s not the doctor who thinks he is God.

Just Before Losing Everything (Avant Que De Tout Perdre, France) – a frustrating situation where a mother tries to extricate herself and her kids from an abusive home place.  I say frustrating because no one will pick up the phone and call the freakin’ cops.  I understand the fear, but this sets a horrible example for those in this situation.

ANIMATED

get a horse lg Room on the Broom (UK) – this is the simplest story of the group, and it’s designed to be a children’s story with a message.  An extremely friendly witch and her constantly annoyed cat team up with a dog, a bird and a frog to defeat a fire-breathing dragon. It’s from the people who brought us The Gruffalo, and has celebrity voice acting from Gillian Anderson, Simon Pegg and Sally Hawkins.

Mr Hublot (France) – the most intricate and stunning animation of the group features an obsessive-compulsive recluse whose life changes dramatically after he adopts a robodog.

Get a Horse! (U.S.) – the Disney entry is undoubtedly the most-seen of the group since it was shown prior to Frozen, one of the year’s biggest box office hits.  It’s a fabulous combination of old and new, as it starts out in classic Black & White and morphs into full color.  Mickey (Walt Disney’s voice) and Minnie Mouse are on a joyride with Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow until Peg-leg Pete starts causing trouble. The only problem with this one is the frenetic pace that makes it impossible to catch all the sight gags.

Feral (U.S.) – speaking of retro, this is Daniel Sousa’s hand-drawn, slightly dark story of the attempt to civilize a young boy raised in the woods.  While it looks beautiful, the story seems incomplete.

Possessions (Japan) – in the footsteps of Japan’s fantastic history of anime, a traveler takes refuge from a storm in a most unusual temple.  The colors are amazing, but the story lacks a real message … every item has a soul??

**NOTE: since it was presented as “Commended”, I would like to mention Pixar’s The Blue Umbrella, which somehow did not make the final cut.  It was shown prior to Monsters University and is a visual delight, and includes the usual Pixar emotions.

OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS – Live Action and Animated (2012)

Greetings again from the darkness. In what has become an annual ritual, I got to take in all of this year’s Oscar nominated short films.  It really is enjoyable and it reminds me of a mini-film festival.  Taking in so many films by so many different filmmakers in a short period of time is pure joy for a movie lover.  This yearthere was the added bonus of having each of the presentations (Live Action and Animated) “hosted” by previous short film Oscar winners William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg (The Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore) and Luke Matheny (God of Love).  The best short films all share one obvious trait … the care and love that goes into the making of each.

Below is my recap by category, in order of preference (not my Oscar predictions):

LIVE ACTION

short death of a shadow Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw, Belgium) Directed by Tom Van Avermaet.  Very odd story of an “art” collector who captures souls through the shadows of those in their moment of death. Nathan is a former soldier who agreed to capture 10,000 shadows for the collector in the hopes of re-discovering his long lost love Sarah. Jealousy and disappointment lead to undesired consequences.  There are many life lessons crammed into this short film.  This one has a unique look and pace.

Henry (Canada) Directed by Yan England. Henry is an old man who has flashbacks as he tries to make sense of his current life.  He was a concert pianist who met his wife, a violinst during the war. These visions are clear in Henry’s head, but he doesn’t know why this lady keeps showing up … then he recognizes her … and then he doesn’t. It’s easy enough to figure out, but very touching with a top notch performance by Gerard Poirier.  The End card has a quote that is apparently from the director’s father.  It goes something like this: “The worst thing about being an old man is realizing you are losing memories”.

Curfew (USA) Directed by Shawn Christensen, who also stars as Richie, the slacker brother who his sister stoops to calling in a moment of desperation.  He agrees to look after his niece Sophia (Fatima Ptacek).  To do so, he has to climb out of the suicide tub he was in when the phone rang. Is this his chance at redemption? Sophia is very smart and fascinating to watch, but it’s tough to shake that opening image of Richie.  Dancing, a bowling alley and some special flipbooks add a level of poignancy to this one.

Asad (South Africa) Directed by Bryan Buckley, who is world renowned for his commercials – especially Super Bowl ads. Here we see that life in Somalia means you are either a Sea Pirate, a Street Thug, an old fisherman, or one of the scared, faceless masses. Asad is a smart, charismatic young boy too young to join the pirates and too smart to get killed by the thugs. His fishing trip would be among my worst days ever, but for him it’s a coming of age.  Did you catch that?

Buzkashi Boys (Afghanistan/USA) Directed by Sam French. My first exposure to the rough sport of Buzkashi … free-for-all polo played with a dead goat.  Ahmad and Rafi are young boys and good friends set against the backdrop of war-ravaged Afghanistan. It’s a tough world for Ahmad, an orphan who hustles on the street for a little food and small change. Life’s not much better for his more reserved friend Rafi, the son of a harsh blacksmith, who is no fan of Ahmad or wasting daylight hours. The ending is not what you might expect, but it’s beautifully shot and well acted by the boys.

ANIMATED

short head over heels Head Over Heels (UK) Directed by Timothy Reckart. Expert claymation depicting an aging married couple that have grown apart emotionally, but have a seemingly comfortable arrangement – despite the visual loss of equilibrium. The husband tries a simple gesture in an effort to re-connect, but the wife misunderstands and it turns their crazy world upside down (again). It’s a heart-warming story of re-discovery.

Fresh Guacamole (USA) Directed by Adam Pesapane aka PES. At 1 minute, 45 seconds this is the shortest short ever nominated for an Oscar. It’s a visual feast as it uses everyday items such as a pool ball, baseball, dice and poker chips to create a stunning bowl of fresh guacamole. Of course, there is no dialogue but it’s colorful to look at and will generate a smile.

Maggie Simpson in “The Longest Daycare” (USA) Directed by David Silverman, producer of the TV series and director of the feature length The Simpsons Movie (2007) and Monsters, Inc (2001).  Marge drops off Maggie (yes, with pacifier) at The Ayn Rand School for Tots.  Kids are divided into “Gifted” and “Nothing Special”. Maggie desperately wants the zen-like environment offered by the gifted area, but instead is hounded by a brutish boy who loves to stomp all living things.  Maggie’s mission is to save a poor butterfly and she uses much trickery in the process.  The short has no dialogue and seems like a segment pulled directly from the brilliant and long-running series.

Adam and Dog (USA) Directed by Minkyu Lee, also nominated for artwork in Wreck-it Ralph. This is a story of Adam in the Garden of Eden and his making friends with a dog. There is no dialogue in this short and it employees my least favorite type of animation. Still, it’s a nice treat watching Adam and the dog bond … well, until Eve enters the picture.  The dog remains loyal until it’s clear to him that Adam has not.

Paperman (USA) Directed by John Kahrs, an animator at Pixar for 15 years.  A chance meeting at the train station between an office clerk and a lovely woman lead to lipstick on the page and a feverish hunt to track down his dream girl.  Rarely have paper airplanes been so vital to a man’s day or the success of a film.  Serendipity and destiny are key players.


Christmas movie mash-up

die hard “Ho-Ho-Ho.  Now I have a machine gun.”  Those words appear in a most creative manner, and jolt us back with a violent reminder  that the action in Die Hard is actually taking place during an office Christmas party!  The Christmas holiday … and all that entails … has played a role in countless movies over the years.  Some of these are sweet, some are funny, some are action-packed, some play to our family emotions and insecurities, some are downright crass, and many are blatant reminders of what’s really important in life.

The following Christmas movie mash-up was posted to YouTube and does a pretty interesting job of capturing the many approaches we have seen in this genre.  It starts nice and easy with Bing Crosby singing, and ends with the glorious sound of Judy Garland.  In between you will see a bit more action within the holiday spirit!

A TRIP TO THE MOON (La Voyage dans la Lune, 1902)

 Greetings again from the darkness.  If you have seen Hugo, you know that a central figure in the Martin Scorcese film is Georges Melies, the grumpy train station vendor who catches young Hugo stealing from him.  Frenchman Georges Melies was an early innovator in filmmaking and his most famous work was A Trip to the Moon (La Voyage dans la Lune) from 1902.  The film is still studied today because of it’s ground-breaking work in animation and special effects, and is considered the first science-fiction film.  The story goes that Melies went bankrupt after Thomas Edison and his technicians copied the film and distributed it in the U.S. before Melies could.  It is also thought that this started the process of film copyrighting, so that ownership of film rights could be determined.

There are many versions of varying length in existence, but I could not find a complete 16 minute version which features the final parade.  The version below has English narration added (albeit with a heavy French accent), and the famous moon landing is at about the 5:45 mark.

 

 

 


OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS – Live Action and Animated (2011)

Greetings again from the darkness. Every year I mention how the Magnolia Theatre in Dallas presents one of my favorite movie events … the Oscar nominated short films. Three hours of quality filmmaking! It’s also a reminder of just how frustrating it is that so few people actually get to see these interesting short films.  Why aren’t they screened periodically throughout the year in association with major film releases?  Pixar manages to do this successfully, so it only makes sense that others could follow suit.  With all of that being said, I must regrettably report that this year’s batch didn’t light the fire for me the way past years have.  The quality of the filmmaking was present, but the creative storytelling fell a bit short.

Below is my recap by category, and in order of preference:

LIVE ACTION

 THE SHORE (Ireland) directed by Terry George.  This one is probably the most mainstream/accessible because it tells a story that is easily relatable.  Ciaran Hinds stars as a man returning home to Ireland after 25 years.  He has his grown daughter (Kerry Condon) in tow, and she is much more anxious than he to reassemble the pieces of his past. As he reconnects with his former best friend and fiancé, we learn they have each harbored secrets and guilt since last they saw each other.  Watching how it plays out is actually quite touching, and includes some humorous moments as well.

TUBA ATLANTIC (Norway) directed by Hallvar Witzo.  Our lead character is an elderly man who has been told by his doctor that he has six days to live.  He is then visited by a self-described Angel of Death – a teenage girl volunteering to spend time with him, and help him through the stages of dying.  Their time together involves her causing him to lose one of his six days thanks to sleeping pills.  She also joins in on his personal vendetta against the local sea gulls, who clearly have been a menace for years. We also see the giant tuba that brings him some peace.

TIME FREAK (USA) directed by Andrew Bowler. One of the two characters has invented a time travel machine for the purpose of realizing his dream of visiting ancient Rome. Instead of visiting Caesar, he jumps off-track due to his inability to get over the minutae of life.  We also get the best Oceanography reference since “Seinfeld”.

PENTECOST (Ireland) directed by Peter McDaniel. We are dropped into 1977 Ireland as a young alter boy makes a critical mistake during mass.  His punishment forces him to miss his beloved futbol team’s big game. Given a second chance, we witness quite a funny pep talk by the local priest.  The sports analogy is impossible to miss, but the young man proves he may be a bit more hard-headed than first thought.

RAJU (Germany) directed by Max Zahle. A young couple travel to India to adopt an orphan boy. What they soon discover is that they are mere bit players in a human trafficking scam.  We see how differently the two people react and how self-interest can sometimes cloud one’s judgment.

ANIMATION

 THE FANTASTIC FLYING BOOKS OF MR MORRIS LESSMORE (USA) directed by William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg. Despite a title that is impossible to remember, this little film was my favorite of the day. In a pretty creative way, it touts the impact that books can have on our lives. It has a tribute to Hurricane Katrina and The Wizard of Oz while it reminds us of the role books can play in providing hopes and dreams.  Humpty Dumpty and Pop Goes the Weasel both play a key role as we see books spring to life, and bring color to the world of kids and adults.

LA LUNA (USA) directed by Enrico Casarosa. This category wouldn’t be complete without the latest gem from Pixar. We see a young boy being introduced to a most unusual family business run by his father and grandfather. His real challenge is finding a way to keep them happy while still making his own mark. He succeeds in very dramatic fashion.

A MORNING STROLL (UK) directed by Grant Orchard. A NYC street scene plays out in three widely different eras: 1959, 2009, 2059.  The twist here is we see a chicken doing the same thing in all 3 time periods, while the people he confronts, and the environment, shift each time.

DIMANCHE / SUNDAY (Canada) directed by Patrick Doyon. A boy is searching for something interesting to do while his family carries on with their Sunday visit.  Things involved include a house-rattling train, 3 crows that mimic the old men, a “mounted” bear and a bunny rabbit.

WILD LIFE (Canada) directed by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby. An English gentleman settles into a simple cabin in the harsh Alberta frontier in 1909.  His letters home paint a rosier picture than what reality dishes. The film compares his plight to that of a comet, replete with burnout.


OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS – Live Action and Animated (2010)

Greetings again from the darkness.  The Dallas Magnolia Theatre again presented showings of all Oscar nominated short films.  This has become one of my favorite movie events of the year.  Short films are quite a different art form than feature length films.  Connections with characters must be made so quickly and interest in the story must be gained within the first couple of minutes, or all is lost. 

It’s really a shame more short films don’t get distributed with mainstream movies.  It would be a nice bonus for the viewers and the filmmakers.  You know what I mean if you saw Toy Story 3 at the theatre this year.  Below is a quick recap of this year’s nominees.  They are by category and in order of my preference.

LIVE ACTION

 THE CRUSH (Ireland) by Michael Creagh.  It’s the age old tale of schoolboy crush on his teacher.  Only this one has quite a twist.  When Ardal discovers that his teacher is engaged to be married, he decides to save her from a marriage to this less-than-admirable character by challenging him to a duel.  This one makes a couple of really good statements in a short period of time and would have been even better if a real actor, rather than the director’s son, had been chosen to play Ardal.

 WISH 143 (UK) by Ian Barnes and Samantha Waite.  A teenage terminally ill cancer patient tells the make-a-wish representative that his wish is to lose his virginity before he dies.  When his story hits the newspaper, it doesn’t go as he wished.  With a little help from a Priest and a very thoughtful young lady played by the very talented Jodie Whittaker (Venus), the boy’s dreams are surpassed in a warm and surprising manner.

 THE CONFESSION (UK) by Tanel Toom.  Two young catholic school boys are on the verge of their first confession.  Being a bit confused on just what to confess, they stage a prank that inevitably goes horribly wrong.  Their response to this tragedy leads to yet another tragedy that is surely to scar for life.  Not very uplifting, but very well done.

 GOD OF LOVE (USA) by Luke Matheny.  The director plays a love song crooner who also happens to be an expert at darts, while terribly misguided on love.  His prayers are answered by the Olympus Foundation in a box of love darts.  Yes, these darts ignite the openness required for two people to fall in love.  While it doesn’t turn out exactly as he had hoped, Olympus rewards his efforts with a promotion to full Cupid status.

 NA WEWE (Belgium) by Ivan Goldschmidt.  This is mid 90’s Burundi and a war between the Hutus and Tutsis is waging.  The similarites to Don Cheadle‘s film Hotel Rwanda are inescapable, but this is limited to one incident where a van full of passengers is stopped and the frightening process of sorting out begins.

 

ANIMATION

 DAY AND NIGHT (USA) by Teddy Newton.  I feel a bit guilty selecting this Pixar production as my favorite, but it is simply another example of the genius we have come to expect from these people.  Sunny dispositioned “Day” stumbles into the dark, gloomy “Night” and the battle begins.  It’s only when they see the world through each other’s eyes that they began to celebrate their similarities and differences.  Whatever you do, don’t mistake this for the lame Tom Cruise movie, Knight and Day.

 THE GRUFFALO (Germany) by Jakob Schuh and Max Lang.  This probably would have been my favorite had it been original instead of based on the children’s book by Julia Donaldson.  The story, message and animation are all superb and it even has hints of Dr. Seuss!  Care for any Owl Ice Cream?

 LET’S POLLUTE (USA) by Geefwee Boedoe.  Created by a Disney animator, this brilliant work is done in the style of a 1960’s educational film … only with top notch satire that instructs the viewer on how to be a better polluter!  The voice-over is tremendous and the lessons can’t be missed.  Want it.  Waste it.

 MADAGASCAR, A JOURNEY DIARY (French) by Bastien Dubois.  This is the most artfully drawn of the nominees.  The watercolors are beautiful and the movements are unique and eye-catching.  Even the music is terrific and unusual.  Presented to us as scrapbook pages describing a trip, we experience many people and the culture, and even the affect on the artist.  This one just needed a bit more substance and it could have jumped to the top of the list.

 THE LOST THING (Australia) by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann.  A guy discovers a most unusual creature just by being a bit more observant than the masses who seem to be lost in their own world.  He helps the thing find it’s place in the world and proves the point that we all belong somewhere … oh yeah, and pay attention to your surroundings!
