THE BEAR (L’ours, Fr., 1988) clip

September 28, 2012

Greetings again from the darkness. At the suggestion of renowned Dallas attorney and UA Dads’ Club board member Robert Elder, this dramatic 4 minute clip comes from one of the most amazing sequences from The Bear (aka L’ours, 1988).  The film was directed by famed French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, who is also known for Quest for Fire (1981), The Name of the Rose (1986), Seven Years in Tibet (1997) and the underrated Enemy at the Gates (2001).  Notice the spectacular photography of the terrain and the stunning animals.  You will also see Bart the Bear, the most famous trained bear in Hollywood history.  Bart was also seen in The Great Outdoors and The Edge (with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins).  At his peak, Bart stood 9′ 6″ tall and weighed 1700 pounds.  He is pictured at left with his trainer Doug Seus.

The Cinemark Theatre chain is running a Classic Film Series this summer.  One of the films in the series is the Alfred Hitchcock classic North By Northwest (from 1959)

The film stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason (as a bad guy).  With a little Hollywood magic (and Grant’s ever-youthful appearance), Grant’s mother is played by Jessie Royce Landis, who is actually only 7 years older than Grant.

You’ll have to be quick to catch Hitchcock’s cameo in this one … it occurs during the opening credits at a bus stop.  You might also notice Edward Platt, who went on to TV fame as The Chief in “Get Smart“.  This was Hitchcock’s only movie for MGM.  The famous scenes taking place on Mt. Rushmore are actually filmed on a replica of the national monument.

Highly recommend catching this one on the big screen if you can …  both the crop duster chase scene and Mt Rushmore sequence are worth the price of admission.

Odd Movie Factoid:

CLARK GABLE was in the final movies of Hollywood’s two greatest sex symbols: Jean Harlow (Saratoga, 1937) and Marilyn Monroe (The Misfits, 1961).  Harlow died at age 26 of uremic poisoning, and Monroe’s death was caused by whatever theory you subscribe to.

Director Sacha Gervasi is currently filming a script based on the Stephen Rebello book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.  The first images of Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock have been released:

Compare Hopkins to the real deal:

The film will also star Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins.  This is not intended to be a remake of Psycho, but rather a display of HOW the film was made.  It may turn out to be fantastic, but my initial reaction is …. hands off my Hitchcock! … so to speak.

Oscar trivia

Oscar winners don’t really own their statues. Upon being presented with their award, winners must sign an agreement stating that should they wish to sell their statuettes, they must first offer them to the Academy for $1.00 If they refuse to sign, they cannot keep their trophy. The rule has been in effect since 1950, which means that older statues do sometimes appear on the open market. If you feel like bidding, be prepared to pay a lot more than $1.00, though: Steven Speielberg bought Bette Davis’ Oscar for $578,000 in 2001 and donated it back to the Academy, and Michael Jackson paid over a million dollars for David O Selznick’s award in 1999.
