WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (2025)

Greetings again from the darkness. The phrase ‘Third time’s the charm’ loses impact when the first two times were also charmed. Such is the case for writer-director Rian Johnson and his ‘Knives Out’ trilogy (so far). The filmmaker has really tapped into the joy of whodunits for those of us who are big fans of the genre. This third one has a darker tone and feel than the first two, but many of the elements remain in place – including a stellar ensemble of well-known actors, some whom only appear briefly.

Rising star Josh O’Connor plays troubled young Priest Jud Duplencity. If you are unfamiliar with O’Connor, I highly recommend REBUILDING (2025) and EMMA. (2020). After a physical confrontation, this Priest gets reassigned to Chimney Rock, where arrogant Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin) rules over his loyal flock which includes devoted assistant Martha (Glenn Close), depressed Dr. Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), stressed out lawyer Vera Draven (Kerry Washington), best selling sci-fi author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), cellist Simone (Cailee Spaeny), groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), and ambitious politician/social media influencer wannabe Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack). As I previously stated, it’s quite an ensemble … and it also includes Mila Kunis, Bridget Everett, Annie Hamilton, Jeffrey Wright, and James Faulkner.

Having this set at a church with two rival Priests make ‘The Good Friday Murder’ one for the Knives Out pages. When superstar detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig)  arrives on the scene, he calls it “The Holy Grail” of murder and a “perfectly impossible” crime. A ‘closed room’ murder with all suspects seated in the church pews – except Priest Duplencity, who is front and center at the altar, creates quite a conundrum for Blanc and the Priest. Of course, that’s where the fun comes in for Rian Johnson and his writing. He excels at weaving a tapestry of confusion sprinkled with just enough witty humor to prevent the mood from sinking too low.

A secret that’s been held for 60 years leads to another contemporary secret, as well as a few more between characters. Eve’s Apple and the religious inserts are a welcome addition, and mostly this is designed as yet another fun treat for the ‘Knives Out’ fan base. There’s even Tom Waits singing “Come On Up to the House” to close things out.

DUST BUNNY (2025)

Greetings again from the darkness. Raise your hand if you were once a kid. Well then, you likely had some experience with a monster under the bed or in the closet. You may have even had an imaginary friend. It no longer matters how your parents handled scary bedtime for you during childhood, but writer-director Bryan Fuller offers a fantastical tale on what could happen if you don’t believe your kids! Mr. Fuller is best known as the creator of the terrific (and dark) TV series “Hannibal”, and he once again collaborates with Mads Mikkelsen, the titular star of that show.

A tense and dialogue-free opening is so cinematically perfect that I immediately wondered if the rest of the film was going to be a letdown. This plays out like a ‘scary’ children’s story twisted through the mind of a grown-up intent on sending this message to parents: bedtime can be scary time for kids. Sophie Sloan plays Aurora, a ten-year-old girl living with foster parents who lack the understanding and comforting skills that Aurora believes they should possess. The dust bunny from the opening scene is the reason Aurora often warns folks to stay off the floor … advice she heeds herself.

A traumatic event occurs when the foster parents ignore her warning, and soon Aurora is negotiating with a mysterious neighbor on the same floor of her building. She believes he can kill the monster, and she’s not above helping herself to the offering plate of the local church to convince him to help. The neighbor is played by Mikkelsen with his customary style – only the first time we see him he’s wielding nunchucks while wearing a 1970’s style track suit. Since he’s a real-life hitman, he’s convinced there are bad guys after him, and they’ve mistaken Aurora’s apartment for his.

Since I mentioned that filmmaker Fuller was likely inspired by childhood stories, I should also make clear that this movie is R-rated and most definitely NOT for kids. Even though the monster appears to be directly from the mind of Jim Henson’s demented uncle, the film spins off into a wild ride of CGI, action sequences, and violence … all done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. There is some wry humor mixed in, but this is a bizarre fantasy on steroids.

Special mention goes to the set directors and costume designers, as this is one of the funkiest and most elaborate apartment buildings we’ve seen on screen, and even Aurora’s bedroom with zany stuffies looks like something out of a dream. Supporting work is provided by Sigourney Weaver as Mikkelsen’s handler, and one not overly sympathetic to Aurora’s situation – although her specialized high heels add to the ambiance; David Dastmalchian as a confused participant; and Sheila Atim as an FBI agent stunned by developments. If your youngster knows the word “procure” or provides details about the monster under their bed, it’s best to believe them.

WIZKID: LONG LIVE LAGOS (2025, doc)

Greetings again from the darkness. There may be no more effective way to change the outside world’s perspective of a culture or country than through music. That’s the path Wizkid is taking to re-introduce the world to his home country of Nigeria and transform the image. Documentarian Karam Gill continues his focus on those in the music industry who have loftier goals than just hit records.

The globalization of music has made it possible for just about anyone to listen to music from most any country and from most any artist. Wizkid, Nigerian born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, certainly looks the part … fancy clothes, plenty of bling, and fashion shades. More importantly, he’s a talented performer who connects with an audience through his Afrobeats. He’s been a star for about 15 years and broke through in the United States about five years ago.

Director Gill uses a scheduled concert at Tutenham Hotspur Stadium as structure for the film. The countdown to the big show includes Wizkid’s preparations as well as the challenge his mother faces with a cancer diagnosis. We see Wizkid as an Ambassador for Nigeria and begin to understand why he is held as a beacon of hope. The payoff for the build-up is that we see him in concert and watch as his fans groove en masse. The question is asked, “What do you stand for?”. It seems clear Wizkid is working to change the perception of Nigeria.

SINNERS (2025)

Greetings again from the darkness. My apologies for this review posting months after it should have. The tardiness of the post has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, which I found quite entertaining and creative. It might be best described as an innovate storytelling approach to an age-old tale … with some very cool twists and turns. Ryan Coogler previously directed BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022), BLACK PANTHER (2018), CREED (2015), and FRUITVALE STATION (2013); however, this is his first fully original film as writer-director, and it certainly doesn’t lack ambition.

You likely know that Michael B Jordan starred in all of Coogler’s films mentioned above, and he’s back here as both “Smoke” (Elijah) and his twin brother “Stack” (Elias). The boys are fresh from Capone’s gang in Chicago, and intent on setting up a juke joint in their old Mississippi hometown stomping grounds. An abandoned sawmill that has seen its share of slaughters will do just fine (and no, you definitely shouldn’t read any foreshadowing or irony into the setting. Wink. Wink.). Since I mentioned the twins, you should know that the technical aspects are astounding (in addition to Jordan’s terrific performances). An early scene where the brothers share a cigarette amazed me in its execution and detail. This was the first of many.

Young, bloody Sammie (the film debut of Miles Caton) staggers to his preacher father’s alter carrying the neck of a shattered Charley Patton guitar. And this may be the closest Coogler’s film gets to a serene scene. What follows is a unique blend of too many bits to list, but definitely includes horror, monsters, blues music, biblical references, southern racism, historical events (Robert Johnson’s crossroads), mythology, mobsters, Mississippi Delta black culture, and enough violence for a few films. You may think you’ve seen all there is to see about vampire mythology, but Coogler doesn’t shy away from new blood (so to speak). Now, is all that just too much for one movie to tackle? Many will likely think so, however, those that go with it will likely find it as entertaining as I did.

The supporting cast is massive and filled with familiar faces and talented actors – too many to list here, but know that each contribution adds to the overall dynamic. I will mention Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Mary, a “dangerous” multi-racial woman who is the bridge between black and white (and perhaps good and evil). There are at least eleven other actors who excel in their role and have a memorable, and often surprising or shocking impact, but the only other one I’ll call by name is the legendary Buddy Guy who appears in the 1992 Epilogue. From a technical standpoint, acknowledging those who created the Southern Gothic horror atmosphere are Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Editor Michael P Shawver, and Composer Ludwig Goransson (a two-time Oscar winner). Filmmaker Ryan Coogler has established himself as one who combines a strong technical team, a stellar cast, and a sharp script to create films that have broader appeal than one might expect (superheroes, vampires, and culture clashes). His films are now must-see cinema.

HAMNET (2025)

Greetings again from the darkness. Watching so many movies each year usually raises my defense mode against cinematic emotional manipulation. However, all hope is not lost for me as the best filmmakers and talented writers and top notch actors can still get to me, as evidenced by this latest from writer-director Chloe Zhao (two Oscars for NOMADLAND, 2020; plus the underappreciated THE RIDER, 2017) and novelist-screenwriter Maggie O’Farrell (her 2020 novel is the source material).

The actors who manage to elevate this extraordinary work to new heights are two of the best actors working today: Jessie Buckley (highly recommend WILD ROSE, 2018) and Paul Mescal (AFTERSUN, 2022). Mr. Mescal plays Will Shakespeare as a tutor at a rural school. He aspires to be a writer (spoiler alert: he succeeds). Ms. Buckley plays Agnes, a local who is labeled as a child of the forest witch, and she actually possesses the spirit of nature and healing. The meet-cute of Will and Agnes is anything but. Spotting Agnes out the window as she carries her pet hawk back to the barn, Will abandons his students and rushes outside to meet her. Yada-Yada … she’s pregnant … the families are not happy … the young couple begins their life together.

Even in the late 16th century, succeeding as a playwright was no easy task. Will often took leave from his family to travel to London for work. A second pregnancy for Agnes bore twins, including daughter Judith who was weakened, and son Hamnet. All in all, this was a close-knit family who experienced joy together despite the challenges – quite a contrast from Will’s family where his dad called him “useless”.

It should be noted that this does not come across as the story of the great William Shakespeare. Instead, it’s the story of a family whose heart is Agnes, and it’s told from her perspective. We are informed that names of the time often had various spellings, so you might be more familiar with Agnes as Anne Hathaway, and son Hamnet as Hamlet, the inspiration for one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. To say more on this would be a spoiler I’m unwilling to provide. You should know that son Hamnet is played by Jacobi Jupe (PETER PAN & WENDY, 2023) and the stage character Hamlet is played by his real-life brother Noah Jupe (FORD V FERRARI, 2019). Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn also have supporting roles.

To be or not to be … a tearjerker … is no question. Director Zhao is a master and Mr. Mescal and especially Ms. Buckley cut right to the heart of a story that will have quite an impact on most every viewer. Grief is such a powerful emotion, and the contrast in how a couple handles it … even a couple deeply in love … makes for a story and a film that is surely one of the year’s best.

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (2025)

Greetings again from the darkness. For live theater lovers, the film version of a favorite play or musical comes with pros and cons. The film’s director, Maria Friedman (a renowned stage actor) strives to deliver the intimacy of a stage performance with cinematic qualities. What we see was the filming of a stage presentation in June 2024 at The Hudson Theater in New York City. The story was written by George Furth with music by Stephen Sondheim, only the production has quite an interesting history, with an original production in 1934 written by George S Kaufman and Moss Hart.

The story structure is fascinating in that it’s presented in reverse order. The opening sequence shows the resulting breakdown of friendship between three: composer Franklin Sheperd (Jonathan Groff), playwright and lyricist Charley Kringas (Daniel Radcliffe), and theater critic and author Mary Flynn (Lindsay Mendez). All three actors are Tony Award winners and are in prime form here. We then proceed to go back in time across three decades as the years are noted. Instead of watching this friendship triumvirate breakdown, we watch the bonds grow stronger … only of course this is actually putting the causes of the breakdown on center stage – one phase at a time.

It’s not just the three leads who are standouts. Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Sheperd, Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephon are all excellent. It’s rare to find so many superb soloists in one program, and each has their moment (or moments) to shine. Beth is Franklin’s first wife and the mother of his child. Gussie is a Broadway star and Franklin’s second wife, while Joe is a producer who experiences the highs and lows of show business.

While the play-it-in-reverse structure provides a uniqueness to the presentation, the story itself has quite a bit to offer in terms of complexity. The fragility of friendship and the importance of constantly working at relationships is front and center, yet it’s only one element. Also on display here is how cruel show business can be. Sometimes you are loved and showered with adulation, while other times they say you are too old for a role. Ego and emotions are constantly in play here, including envy and arrogance. Although it’s the sneakiest element, perhaps my personal favorite is the unrequited love Mary carries towards an unaware Franklin. It leads to her bitterness and alcoholism, and her story is the most interesting when you read about the origins of Kaufman’s story.  When the opening number is a robust, “How did you get to be here?”, the rest of the play is spent showing us.

IT’S NEVER OVER, JEFF BUCKLEY (2025, doc)

Greetings again from the darkness. The Music Box series at HBO brings us this documentary from Amy Berg (Oscar nominated for DELIVER US FROM EVIL, 2006), who profiles the tragic tale of the immensely talented Jeff Buckley. When he died in 1997 at age 30, Buckley had only released one album, “Grace”. Many musicians and critics call it one of the best albums ever. This film tells us how he reached that level.

Throughout the film we hear stories and memories from Jeff’s mother, Mary Guibert, and his ex-girlfriends, Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser. Mom recalls baby Jeff ‘vocalizing’ to the radio from his bassinet. She also explains how Jeff’s father, Tim, left to pursue his own career rather than stick around to be part of a family. Yes, you might recognize the name Tim Buckley. He was a popular musician who died at age 28 from a heroin overdose. Seventeen-year-old single mom, Mary, and Jeff ‘raised each other’ and Jeff always had a close bond with mom. Young Jeff even got to see his dad perform once, and ultimately sang at his dad’s funeral.

Much of the film is dedicated to detailing how Jeff honed the skills to sync with his other-worldly singing voice. He was a poetic songwriter in the vein of Bob Dylan and Morrissey, while Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin influenced his musical style. Just to highlight his uniqueness, Jeff also covered Nina Simone, and is best remembered for his haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s iconic “Hallelujah”. Singer Aimee Mann (‘Til Tuesday) also provides some perspective from a musician’s viewpoint.

One of my favorite nuggets here is how Jeff found a good (re)use for Michael Bolton cassettes, but a key point is how his tremendous debut album was so unique that it proved to be an uneasy fit for radio play. Director Berg includes a great deal of archival footage that I’d never seen – both concerts and interviews. Jeff was a young man who suffered from depression, and would likely receive better treatment these days. His death in Wolf River in Memphis still seems a bit confusing in light of how he had spent the previous couple of weeks. We hear the final voicemail he left for his mother, and it’s heartbreaking. Music was Jeff’s entire being, and a reminder that some souls simply burn too hot to last long.

PAUL ANKA: HIS WAY (2025, doc)

Greetings again from the darkness. “The needle in the arm.” That’s how Paul Anka describes the will and the need to carry on after all of these years. How many years, you ask … well, he’s the only singer/songwriter to have a Billboard charting song in seven consecutive decades. Paul Anka is now 84 years old and documentarian John Maggio shows us that Anka is still going strong, still touring, still writing songs, and still loving what he does.

The Canadian born Anka came to the United States with $100 in his pocket and almost immediately signed a recording contract. Not long after, he had his first number one hit, “Diana”, and became part of the new wave of teen idols with Pat Boone, Frankie Avalon, and Bobby Darin. This was on the heels of the legendary Rat Pack – Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Dean Martin. Musical tastes were evolving, and one thing that stands out in this documentary is Paul Anka’s ability and desire to evolve. When the British Invasion hit (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, etc), Anka transitioned from teen idol to renowned songwriter, actor, and international entertainer.

Director Maggio chooses wisely in putting Paul Anka front and center and walk us through this fabulous and unique career that began in the 1950’s and continues today. Anka is direct and charismatic and honest as he walks us through the various phases. How fascinating that one man has written over 900 songs, recorded more than 130 albums and sold more than 90 million units. How many songwriters can say they have had their songs recorded by Frank Sinatra, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Michael Jackson, and even Doja Cat, Justin Timberlake, and Drake? And that’s just naming a few and leaves out the highly familiar theme song to “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”.

What’s truly remarkable is that Paul Anka’s career would be documentary-worthy if it only covered his personal career (which began at age 15) of performing on stage (which he still does). Sure, he’s the guy who wrote “My Way” (at age 25), but hearing Anka tell the story behind the song is a thrill. Anka is matter-of-fact when discussing his first divorce, as well as the challenges of balancing family life with the career. He seems humble when discussing his accomplishments with Frankie Avalon, and serious when informing us of his commitment to health all these years. This remarkable man continues to live a remarkable life … and he’s done it ‘his way’.

YOU GOT GOLD: A CELEBRATION OF JOHN PRINE (2025, doc)

Greetings again from the darkness. “Celebration” is the best description and an apt title for this film from Michael John Warren. It’s not a profile of the great songwriter, John Prine; however, it’s most certainly a celebration of his immense and unique talent. And who better to celebrate and pay tribute than some of the musicians and songwriters who have been so influenced by his work?

In October 2022, a couple of years after Prine passed away from COVID complications, a two-night concert event was held at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. More than seventy performers lined up to go on stage and pay tribute to the legendary songwriter. Most performed Prine’s songs, while some performed their own originals which they didn’t hesitate to mention were influenced by Prine’s astounding style of telling stories grounded in reality. His was true Americana music, and these performers were proud of their connection – whether it was decades long like Bonnie Raitt, or more recent like Kacey Musgraves.

A steady stream of well-known performers take their turn on stage to pay their respect through music. Just a partial list includes: Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovitt, Brandi Carlile, Steve Earle, Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakim, and Jason Isbell. One of the surprising highlights was I’m With Her performing “Unwed Father”, but of course my favorite moments were clips of John Prime himself. We see archival footage from 1978 Austin City Limits, and then a clip from 1980 where Prine performs the touching “Hello in There”. And don’t worry, we are treated to Bonnie Raitt (with help from Carlisle) singing “Angel From Montgomery”.

Many of the performers, including son Tommy Prine, gather on stage for a finale which smoothly transitions to a clip of John Prine singing “Paradise”. Someone states John Prine’s music is “good for the soul and the ear”, and it’s clear we “miss you in the morning light like roses miss the dew.” Balloon drop.

Opens in NYC on November 28, followed by a nationwide release.

THE SHUFFLE (2025, doc)

Greetings again from the darkness. Which pro football team had a hit song that reached number 41 on the pop charts and was awarded a gold record? Well, if you were around in 1985, you probably know it was the Chicago Bears and their song, “The Super Bowl Shuffle”. Director Jeff Cameron (“Hard Knocks”) in partnership with NFL Films proceeds to tell us more than we ever cared to know about the team, the song, and the video.

The film opens with the 12-0 Bears headed to Miami to play on Monday Night Football. As Jim McMahon says, that “was not our night”. The perfect season was no longer possible after Dan Marino and the Dolphins won 38-24. The nugget of information that makes this interesting is that it was the day after this game when the Bears were scheduled to film their music video. You can imagine the mood of the team had changed. Willie Gault knew linebacker Mike Singletary was key to uniting the guys and keeping to the commitment.

Mix Engineer Fred Breitberg is interviewed and spills a bit of trivia when he lets us know that the song was adapted from “The Kingfish Shuffle”, part of “The Amos ‘n Andy Show” (from the 1950’s). It was Jovan CEO Dick Meyer who had the brainstorm for the music video, and his surviving spouse lets us know that was her in the referee uniform blowing the whistle in the video (another bit of trivia). Sportswriter Rick Telander provides some perspective on the times and the impact of the Bears and video … they were media stars.

We do get to go behind the scenes (on set) as the video is filmed, and it’s pretty funny to watch these sports giants struggle to get the dance steps down. Poor Leslie Frazier is crowned the team’s worst dancer and takes a bit of grief from his teammates, as you would expect. Then we see Walter Payton and Jim McMahon superimposed over the team portion, as they both skipped the initial filming. Was the team challenging karma by recording the video prior to qualifying for the Super Bowl? Or were they just confident? Either way, Singletary firmly believes the project led to a deep bonding with teammates that never would have happened without the video.

This was the MTV era and the video (VHS) and record (45 rpm) went viral – well what was considered viral in the pre-internet days. The team raised over $300,000 for Chicago Community Trust (a charity) and ultimately lost the Grammy to a fellow from Minneapolis that went by the name Prince. After the Bears trounced the Patriots in the Super Bowl, it left us wondering if the lyrics were misleading … it certainly seemed like this team really was there to start some trouble. A final piece of buried trivia that the film uncovers is that the Patriots actually responded with a video of their own. No one seemed to notice.
